There are large scale protests in front of Congress and BJP-JJP MP/MLAs in Punjab and Haryana respectively to protest the delay in paddy procurement which was scheduled to begin from October 1 but on the last moment was postponed till October 11 and other conditions imposed on procurement. Since the farmers had already reached mandis in many places with their produce this last moment delay caused widespread anger among the farmers who did not know what to do with the produce. Farmers gheraoed houses of BJP-JJP MP/MLAs across Haryana including the CM House, Karnal where farmers reached with trolleys full of paddy. In many cities farmers broke barricades to reach the houses of local MLAs and MPs. Heavy police force, RAF and BSF companies deployed in many places. Farmers were lathicharged, arrested and water cannons were used in many places. By evening the Chief Minister, DyCM and others reach Delhi and discuss the issue with the Food Supply and Consumer Affairs minister. Government withdraws its earlier orders and announces paddy procurement to start from October 3. Farmers’ organizations end protests.
