Sugarcane farmers announce blockades

Sugarcane farmers in Punjab’s Doaba and Majha regions under the banner of Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee announces blocking of the Jalandhar-Delhi national highway and railway tracks on August 20, 2021 to demand a hike in sugarcane prices and payment of pending dues from the mills [22]. A number of farmers’ organizations had submitted these demands to the state government in September 2020 but there was no action taken for the last sugarcane season. On August 24, the five-day long farmers’ protest yields a historic hike of Rs 50 per quintal taking the State Agreed Price (SAP) to Rs 360 per quintal making it the highest in the country. This includes a hike of Rs 15 per quintal announced on the eve of the road blockade. The state government also agrees to clear all pending sugarcane dues in 15 days. The hike achieved by the Punjab farmers is significant and historic as the prices of sugarcane had remained unchanged for the last 4 years in Punjab.
